Letting Go and Showing Up

I’m excited to share that I recently joined Amy Stone on her fantastic podcast, “The Art of Imperfect Adulting,” for an open and heartfull conversation about my caregiving journey with my mom. This was more than just a chat—it was a chance to revisit the adventure, the challenges, and the humor that shaped those years and inspired my book, A Cup of Tea on the Commode.

In this episode, we talk honestly (and sometimes hilariously) about what it really takes to step up as a caregiver, especially as a son in a role so often assigned to daughters. Here’s what you’ll hear:

  • How I went from a “carefree bachelor life” in LA to 24/7 caregiver in New Jersey, and what prompted that big life transition
  • The family dynamics, expectations, and examples (including a heroic aunt and a mouse! Yes, really) that shaped my approach to care
  • A candid look at redefining roles and dignity while facing the reality of aging, memory loss, and the quirks of everyday caregiving
  • Practical tips, support strategies, and the importance of treating hard moments with humor and love

If you’re caring for an aging parent, wrestling with whether or how to step into a caregiver role, or just need reassurance that imperfection and laughter belong in every “adulting” story—this episode is for you. As we discussed:
“There was no line I wouldn’t cross to make her life better.”

Plus, listen in for stories that will make you laugh (like why buying nightdresses for your mom requires stealthy shopping skills), details about my memoir, and advice on finding your own “caregiving wheelhouse”—whether you’re a hands-on helper or support from the sidelines.

The parent/child role reversal might not have been unique to me, but how I dealt with it was. "A Cup of Tea on the Commode" chronicles my multi-tasking adventures, filling my mother’s last years with love, laughter, and joy. Though not always successful, I came pretty damn close.
