Your Favorite Son
Mom: Now, what is it I call you? I thought she was kidding, so I kidded back. Me: Mark, your favorite son. Mom: I don’t have favorites. Me: You have a favorite to forget.
The Meds are Working
Mom: Why do you treat me so well? Me: Because you’re my mother and I love you. Mom: You’re a good kid. Me: Finally, the meds are working.
Eight Glasses
Mom: You’re supposed to drink eight glasses of water a day. Mark: Where did you hear that? Mom: I don’t know. (she downs her glass) Mark: One down, seven more to go. Mom: No thanks.
Sherbet
After her doctor cut off all food and medications, Mom prescribed her own remedy; sherbet. Eight bowls a day. Every day. She was 89 and getting stronger. How could I say “No”?
