A New Wardrobe

My first task after taking over Mom’s caregiving duties was buying her a new wardrobe. No more drab nightdresses. She got so excited, she decided to wear them all at once.

Three Bags of Crunchy Granola

Mom: I’m saying goodbye. Mark: Where are you going? Mom: Heaven, I hope. Mark: Why? Mom: Well, I’m not going to hell. Mark: Of course not, but why now? I just fixed up the house. Mom: The what? Mark: The house. Don’t you want to enjoy it? (no response) And I just bought three bags of crunchy granola. (She laughs and falls back asleep)

You’re Gonna Need a Bigger Fireplace

As our family grew, so did the Everest of gifts Mom bought. The house could handle the increasing numbers, but the fireplace could not. Stockings spanned the entire face and spilled onto both sides, two or more to a hook, prompting visitors to say, “You’re gonna need a bigger fireplace.”

A Bonus Teaser “Halloween”

Mom loved Halloween. Why not? If gave her another excuse to shop. But for Halloween on 2013, I did the shopping which included costumes for the two of us. I wanted to show the neighborhood Genevieve was back and ready for some trick or treating.

“You Look Tired”

After a long night of little sleep, Mom calls for me at 6:00 am. I stumble out of bed and into her room.
Mom: You look tired.
Mark: I wonder why.

Mom: Now, what is it I call you?
I thought she was kidding, so I kidded back.
Mark: Mark, your favorite son.
Mom: I don’t have favorites.
Mark: You have a favorite to forget.

Genevieve’s Warehouse (excerpt)

Providing for six kids required shopping, lots of shopping. While Ridgewood offered several upscale clothing stores within walking distance, the real bargains were just a short drive away. The Garden State Plaza, the Fashion Center, Paramus and Bergen Malls, as well as several New York City designer outlets—in less than designer locations—all beckoned. If and when jonesing for a sweet deal, she could score relief in minutes. It was all too tempting for Mom and her addiction.
