It Might Be Time to Get Mom Some Help (excerpt)

… When you stop laughing at that television commercial with the old lady on the floor yelling, “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up,” because your mother spends more time on the floor than on her feet, it might be time to get Mom some help.

If she talks to her stuffed animals and porcelain statues and believes they talk back, it might be time to get Mom some help.

If your mother invites you to cuddle with her in bed and not in a normal mother-son way but in a Greek-tragedy way, it might be time to get Mom some help.

If she sees children in chocolate coats on her bedroom ceiling and calls you silly when you ask, “Are the coats made of chocolate or are they chocolate-colored?” it might be time to get Mom some help.

If she can’t name the legendary actor (John Wayne) on the television yet insists the legendary actor (John Wayne) is not who you say the legendary actor (John Wayne) is, it might be time to get Mom some help.

And if several garbage bags overflowing with UPC labels isn’t enough to satisfy her UPC label fixation, it might be time to get Mom some help.

On a serious note: If she can no longer manage medications, make phone calls, prepare meals, clean house, do laundry, handle finances, or if she has trouble using the toilet, or eating, dressing, bathing, grooming, getting in and out of bed, getting in and out of chairs, or staying on her feet and off the floor, it might be time to get Mom some help.

It was. And we did.

The parent/child role reversal might not have been unique to me, but how I dealt with it was. "A Cup of Tea on the Commode" chronicles my multi-tasking adventures, filling my mother’s last years with love, laughter, and joy. Though not always successful, I came pretty damn close.

  1. How is it that the time from helping your parents to the realisation that your not far from that time yourself creeps up on you really quickly? X
